Kyra Toms started her journey at West Virginia Junior College in April of 2021. Kyra chose the Dental Assisting diploma program, which allows her to learn the skills needed for today’s dental field in just 12 months. Kyra says she made this choice because of “the layout and time length of the program, and it matched my lifestyle at this time.” She was eager to start the program and complete her courses to begin her career in the dental field.

Kyra did not attend any other college before beginning WVJC. When she completed high school, she worked in a local daycare center while also raising her son, who is her pride and joy. Once Kyra began her studies at WVJC, she was quickly recognized by her instructors for her dependability, organization, study skills, and her overall dedication to her education.

Kyra chose WVJC because of its convenient location to her house and its great reviews online. Once she began her courses, she quickly discovered her favorite part of WVJC. “It’s a smaller school, which makes things more personable and a better learning environment,” explains Kyra. Her favorite instructor is Mrs. Bowels, WVJC’s Dental Program Director, as she is dedicated to her students and shows her passion for the dental program in all of the courses she teaches.

Kyra loved the chairside dental assisting class because of the hands-on learning. This course led her into her externship, where she could put her education and skills into action. Kyra was excited about the opportunity to complete her externship at Conde and Malone Dental. During her hours, she proved to be such a valuable asset to their team that they offered her a position for employment. Kyra will not only graduate from the Dental Assisting diploma program in March, but she will also begin her career the same month.

Kyra is excited about her future and already working in her field of study. Other than continuing to be a wonderful wife and mother, her long-term goal is to continue her education even further in a nursing program!
