Hi! My name is Lori Audia, and I am an admissions team member here at WVJC Bridgeport. Every day, I am given the opportunity to work with individuals like you looking to improve their lives through education. I feel very fortunate to be able to assist students on this very important journey! What I would like students to know about me is that I am on your team! I am here to help you every step of the way. Whether you have questions you need answered or someone to listen to, I am here for you!
College can be an exciting time; however, it can also be a time of unknowns. Some of you may have just graduated high school and are coming into the world of college not knowing what to expect, and some of you may have graduated several years ago and may have forgotten the proper ways to take notes and study. Regardless if you are fresh out of high school or returning after several years away from education, here are some tips for student success.
1. Communicate
Do not be afraid to communicate with your instructors and all other faculty and staff on campus. We all have a common goal, and that is to see the student succeed! If we do not know that you have any questions or concerns, we cannot help, so communication is essential to your success here at WVJC. If you do not understand or something is unclear, ask! The only dumb questions are the questions that are not asked! Chances are someone has the same question you do. Be an advocate for yourself, as well as your classmates! Keep an open line of communication with your instructors! If you are struggling, they are your first source of support! Our instructors and all the faculty and staff are dedicated to you and your success in school and beyond!
2. Attendance is Key
When you miss class, you risk missing vital information or learning a skill pertinent to your career! We understand that things beyond your control may occur, but prioritize attendance.
3. Be Supportive
Be supportive of each other! A smile and some encouraging words go a long way!! You may be why someone continues when they feel like giving up. Sometimes it is the little things that mean the most. Never discount the small gestures that may mean the world to someone! Do not be afraid to initiate study groups among your classmates. Set up one day a week to get together as a group to review that week’s assignments. Working as a team will help you learn new study techniques you may not have thought of!
4. Set a Good Example
Set a good example for your classmates! You never know who is watching! Other students may look up to you without you even realizing it! Be someone that they are proud to know!
5. Take Pride in Everything You Do!
Treat each assignment with the same care and respect that you would give to a project or patient assigned to you by your future employer! Also, all that you do is a direct reflection of you. Be proud of yourself and all that you have accomplished. More importantly, be proud that you are brave enough to take this important journey.
