Encompass Health – Externship Highlight

Sue Bolyard, the Program Manager of Hospital Education, gave WVJC Online a peek at what our WVJC Online Clinical Medical Assistant students will experience during their externship at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Morgantown.

“Your WVJC students will receive training about our rehabilitation patients. We provide medical care and also functional care. Your students will learn glucose monitoring, bladder scanning, transfers, activities of daily living techniques, and how to treat the patient with CPR; Comfort, Professionalism, and Respect,” Sue tells us.

Encompass Health is a national leader in integrated healthcare services that offers both facility-based and home-based patient care through its network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, home health agencies, and hospice agencies. The organization is known nationally as it includes 139 hospitals, 241 home health locations, and 82 hospice locations in 39 states and Puerto Rico and has been ranked as one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work for. Sue confirms this as she shared with us that there are many benefits and opportunities for their patients, family, and staff.

Speaking of career opportunities, Sue says that the company has benefitted from having WVJC externs, as several WVJC students that have gone through their facility have become employed after training with them. Sue and her team enjoy providing the training and feel accomplished when they watch students gain the experience they will need in their future careers.

Sue shares that there is growth happening within their business. You can expect to see Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Morgantown to be Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Certified along with their current certification from the Joint Commission as a Stroke Center of Excellence. “With the population aging, we are seeing more patients with chronic illnesses and problems that go along with them. Our goal is to improve the quality of their life!” says Sue.

Going into the medical field, you have to be determined but also have care in your heart for your patients. So when entering school, Sue advises students to “study hard, get a degree, be a contributing adult to our society, and take some time to enjoy life with friends and family!”

Bullock Properties, LLC – Externship Highlight

West Virginia Junior College Business Administration program is grateful for the relationship established with Bullock Properties, LLC. The owner of Bullock Properties, LLC, Mr. Tighe Bullock, serves as a great resource to WVJC students. Bullock Properties is a real estate development company specializing in historic preservation and small business development. Bullock Properties works with prospective tenants to select and redevelop historic properties in the Elk City Historic District of Charleston’s West Side.

The company’s climate has shifted slightly since the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has expanded its product offerings and now contracts out work for specialty historic preservation projects, in addition to providing specialty hardwood slabs, light fixtures, and other unique offerings. Bullock Properties hopes to expand its service and product offering beyond Charleston to other historic properties and neighborhoods in West Virginia. As the company grows and expands geographically, it also hopes to expand its offerings through vertical integration.

The WVJC Business Administration student externs at Bullock Properties are provided an opportunity to learn about real estate acquisitions, property taxes and tax maps, contract drafting and execution, human resources management, legal compliance, finance, and banking relationships, among other skills. Mr. Bullock stated, “Bullock Properties is afforded a great opportunity through the externship program to meet young emerging professionals and hear new approaches to old problems. The externs are sharp, caring people who add a new element to the regular office workday. The externs also allow other employees to interact and get to know the students.”

Mr. Bullock has several pieces of advice for WVJC students entering college in 2020/2021:

  • “Take this opportunity to grow yourself and your work habits.
  • Double the amount of studying you did in high school. You get what you put into your work.
  • Make friends and stay in touch with them. You will thank yourself later in life.
  • Learn to appreciate helping others. We find intrinsic meaning by giving ourselves to our fellow human beings.
  • Be professional, but have fun.”

Health Access – Online Externship Partner

West Virginia Junior College and Health Access have had an externship partnership since 2018. Health Access has a philanthropic mission and devotion to serving the underserved, which has made for a perfect match with WVJC students interested in the medical field.

Health Access helps serve the community by providing access to comprehensive medical care spanning across several services such as primary care, cancer screenings, prescription fulfillment, dental care, vision screening, behavioral medicine, harm reduction, and women’s healthcare. Their mission to serve those who may otherwise lack access or be unable to afford care has helped the uninsured seek care when needed the most. The services they provide come at no cost for the most vulnerable residents of Harrison and Doddridge counties.

Josh Brown, Medical Practice Manager of Health Access, has always welcomed WVJC students to the facility to work alongside his staff and gain real-world knowledge in the medical field. Several students in the Clinical Medical Assistant, Medical Office Administration, and Medical Coding programs have completed their externship hours at the facility and have obtained crucial patient interaction experience.

West Virginia Junior College is proud to have an affiliation with such a critical organization for North Central West Virginia residents. WVJC hopes to continue this partnership for years to come.
