WVJC Charleston Academic Dean – Katie Harvey

Katie HarveyWest Virginia Junior College Charleston welcomes Academic Dean, Katie Harvey!

WVJC Charleston has experienced a growth in student enrollment over the past year, with that growth came a need for additional staff to best support the student body. Mrs. Katie Harvey was brought onto the WVJC family in January 2016 as the Academic Dean.

Katie is from Saint Albans, WV not far from Charleston. She earned her undergraduate degree in Marketing from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. From there she moved back home and pursued her MBA at Marshall University.

Upon moving back to the Kanawha Valley, Katie worked in marketing for the Mardi Gras Casino and Resort in Cross Lanes, WV. She had an exciting position as the promotions coordinator and social media manager. It was a very busy and ever changing position, however after 3.5 years it was time for a change.

While Academic Dean is a transition from her last position she says she is very excited to do what she has always aspired to, “making a difference in peoples’ lives”.

The Academic Dean’s office is centrally located in the middle of campus. Her office is in the middle of the main floor hallway, where every student passes. She has taken on the role full speed ahead and is enjoying every minute of the transition.

“Since taking on this position my favorite part would be interacting with students and guests on a daily basis. I’m making a difference in their lives by offering academic guidance, support, devising plans of action, or just offering time to listen to students. I love what I do and I want students to drop in, not only for help but even to say hi,” says Harvey.

Katie wants all students to know she has an open door policy in her office. If things are on their mind that have nothing to do with school but they need to get it off their chests, Katie encourages them to talk with her.

“Whatever students are going through, academic or not, I want to make their experience to be the best at WVJC. If I can help, provide resources, or simply be that support for one student, that is what I am here for. College is not easy but when you have a dynamic team in your corner, success is possible,” says Harvey.

When she is not on campus Katie has a very busy life. She spends her time with her family: husband, newborn son, Landon and their furbabies, Elvis and Dexter.
