5 Benefits of Getting Your Degree in Cybersecurity at WVJC Online

Are you interested in pursuing an exciting career in technology? Cybersecurity is one of the available technologies in the U.S., and companies are searching for professionals with the appropriate training and background to fill these roles.

Read on to learn about five aspects of getting your degree in Cybersecurity at WVJC Online.

YOUR TIME YOUR SCHEDULE

One of the realities of studying online is convenience and a pathway to the professional workplace. Students returning to school later in life may find an online program more suitable for their work schedule and family responsibilities.

The WVJC Online Cybersecurity program currently has students enrolled who are working and looking forward to having a successful pathway and career in cybersecurity. Our 18-month program is designed for students to train to enter the professional world upon graduation.

Our goal is to make students excited about their learning, and because of its online nature, the program’s non-synchronized classes afford students the time needed to study at their own pace.

STUDENT-ORIENTED

Students can expect to work with other classmates who have enrolled in the program for similar reasons. Though this program is online, students have the opportunity to connect with classmates through group projects, web-based group discussions, and other forums.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

Students who enroll at WVJC Online will participate in an externship before the conclusion of the program. The externship will occur in a real work environment, allowing students to apply their training in real-world situations. By the end of the program, students should have the skills necessary to handle circumstances related to incident response, security architecture, threat management, and vulnerability management.

Our goal at WVJC is for students to develop marketable skills that are career-focused and time-efficient without compromising precious classroom time learning subject matter unrelated to their professional and educational goals.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING

Professional opportunities in cybersecurity are available. Our online program prepares students to train for three of the certifications employers could be interested in for their candidates.

Outlined below is an overview of each certification.

Network+ Certification*

The Network+ Certification certifies the necessary skills required to design, configure, manage, and maintain computer network architecture and devices and includes a basic understanding of cloud computing best practices and critical security concepts that help networking professionals work with security practitioners.

Security+ Certification*

The Security+ Certification is an established worldwide standard for best practices in information technology, cybersecurity networking, and operational integrity. Security+ focuses on the latest trends and techniques in risk management, risk mitigation, threat management, and intrusion detection.

Cybersecurity Analyst+ (CySA+) Certification*

The CySA+ Certification applies behavioral analytics to the information technology field to prevent, detect, and combat cybersecurity threats. The CySA+ certifies that the student has the necessary skills to perform data analysis, vulnerability, risk, and impact assessments, configure threat-detection tools, and secure and protect applications and systems within an organization.

Summer Parsons – Student Highlight

Legal Office Assisting student Summer Parsons has been attending WVJC since May 2020. Prior to starting college and after high school, Summer took a year off. She said she was feeling “stuck” in Morgantown and was beginning work as a server. She decided that it was time for her to make a change and followed her heart to begin her career in the legal field!

When deciding where she would attend college, Summer knew that she was not ready to begin a 4-year degree. She wanted something a little faster that would still allow her to obtain a good career. At the time, she was not completely sure what she wanted to do in the legal field, and she also did not want to spend all of the money that a 4-year college costs if she was not sure of her path. With this being said, she knew she was interested in the legal field because she was always involved in politics and wanted to advocate for others. Summer wants to make a difference, and she knows this program will allow her to do so!

During Summer’s time at WVJC, she has made some amazing connections with her instructors. In particular, she said, “Bryce (Adkins) and Dustin (Blankenship) would have to be my favorites. They have helped me with so much.” She said that they both helped her academically and with personal issues, going above and beyond what she expected.

After graduation, Summer plans to go on and get her bachelor’s degree in public policy. She hopes this will allow her more opportunities to work in either criminal defense law or family law. This decision is based on her desire to help others and be their voice when they do not have one. The passion Summer has for the legal field is shown through her work and her goals! She is also hoping to pursue higher education somewhere warmer. Her family is from Florida, so that may be the place calling her name! In conclusion, Summer emphasized multiple times how she loves going to WVJC and tells all of her friends that are struggling with finding what they want to do or who need a good support system to come to WVJC!

CPR Cell Phone Repair – Externship Highlight

We took a trip down to our newest externship site, CPR Cell Phone Repair, located in the Suncrest Town Centre in Morgantown! Immediately upon walking into the doors, you feel welcomed by the manager, Matt Bowen.

Matt informed us that CPR Cell Phone Repair has an interesting history as they were once better known as Fanelli Boys. Fanelli Boys has been repairing electronic devices since 1997, when their first shop opened in Orlando, Florida, and has been expanding ever since. It has only been 4 years that CPR Cell Phone Repair has been using their new name but remains associated with Fanelli Boys. CPR Cell Phone Repair has kept up with the Fanelli Boys standards as they quickly diagnose and fix electronic devices.

WVJC students have a lot to learn from this well-established franchise as they learn how to troubleshoot and diagnose electronic devices such as cellphones, tablets, computers, and laptops. Their externship experience at CPR Cell Phone Repair allows students to get an understanding of how to troubleshoot not only hardware issues but also software issues. Students get the hands-on experience they need to increase their technical knowledge and increase their problem-solving abilities. Another exciting experience for students is shadowing excellent customer service techniques delivered by the CPR technicians. Therefore, our students who extern at CPR Cell Phone Repair will get the technological experience they are looking for and learn techniques for professionally interacting with customers.

WVJC students are not the only ones benefitting from this partnership. Matt expressed that it has been beneficial to have WVJC students as externs because they bring fresh eyes and new ideas. Matt and his team also shared that they genuinely enjoy teaching these skills to students. This experience for both parties opens up the opportunity for permanent employment if students show a dedication to learning and a strong work ethic.

All Smiles Dental, LLC – Externship Highlight

All Smiles Dental, LLC is a dental office located in Bridgeport, WV. West Virginia Junior College has been fortunate enough to have a contract with All Smiles Dental for the past couple of years. This contract allows our students to complete their externship at their bustling office. Students work with up-to-date equipment and newer technology to expand their knowledge as a dental assistant. All Smiles offers dental care such as general dentistry, prevention, implants, denture, crowns, and so much more. This experience gives WVJC students the chance to expand and learn about the different areas of dentistry in one office.

Students who complete their externship at All Smiles Dental gain experience in four-handed dentistry; this means that the dental assistant’s two hands are assisting the dentist’s two hands, reducing the amount of time a dental exam or procedure may take. They are able to interact with the patients, take digital x-rays and even learn how to use a Cerec machine.  A Cerec machine is a machine where you take a digital impression of a patient’s mouth and design a crown. Then, that design is sent to a machine that utilizes computer-aided design (CAD) and can create a crown in the office. This valuable knowledge is what students look forward to in their externship.

Our students at WVJC Bridgeport are very thankful that they have the opportunity to complete their externships at All Smiles Dental. Students rave about how much they love going there and their experience while in the office. All Smiles has also expressed how grateful they are to have our WVJC students. They have also graciously donated their older chairs to the Dental Assisting program, which helps our students in the classroom.

WVJC Bridgeport graduate Kristina Conaway completed her externship at All Smiles Dental and stated that she loved the office. Kristina said she learned how to assist the doctor and take impressions and x-rays on patients by herself. She loved the experience that she received from the office and hopes to work at an office like All Smiles Dental in the future.

Christina Hayslett – Staff Highlight

Christina Hayslett is a Financial Aid Officer at WVJC Charleston. She finds it fulfilling to work at WVJC because of the many lives she can be a part of, as she watches students grow into confident and successful individuals. “These are real people, mothers, fathers, first time-students, all making an effort to do and be better. This gives us the responsibility to do and to be better as well.”

Christina understands the demographic of many of our students. A graduate of Marshall University, Christina began her higher education right out of high school, but as she began to have a family of her own, the inconvenience of traditional school interrupted her education. It was several years after her daughter was born that she returned to finishing her bachelor’s degree. “If I had known about a school like WVJC, I would’ve seen that I could both be a mother and student at the same time, and not make a sacrifice to either.”

Christina has previously worked in admissions in low-income based education services and understands the connection between education and finances. Christina says, “It is the goal of WVJC Financial Aid, to make school affordable today, but not leave you with an enormous debt tomorrow.” The financial aid team in Charleston works to establish a plan that allows you to focus on your education and not the burden of cost. As a native of West Virginia, Christina concludes, “West Virginia residents need careers here in our own state, and at WVJC, we can help make that dream a reality.”

“Traditional college isn’t for everyone, but education is. Finding the right school, a program that you are interested in, and a staff that supports your real life is key. We have that here at WVJC because WE CARE about your success.”

The dedicated range of hours necessary to complete your externship is 90 or 160 hours. These hours are completed in a 12-week time span. WVJC has developed many relationships with reputable businesses in and around our student’s location of residency to assist with making their externship term go as smoothly as possible.

Being given the opportunity to work with a location site for your externship hours is beneficial in more than one way. This opportunity should be added to a professional resume, giving employers the opportunity to see hands-on experiences gained to partner with your education. Mountain State Medical Specialties – Externship Highlight

At West Virginia Junior College, we not only provide you with small classes and a great experience, but also with a hands-on externship. During the end of your program, you will be assisted with finding a great site to provide the best hands-on experience for you. Many businesses in the area are more than happy to help our students become the best professionals they can be.

Mountain State Medical Specialties is just one facility that continuously provides our students with excellent hands-on experiences. They provide our students with the ability to see professionals at work every day, striving to be the best medical facility they can be. Mountain State Medical Specialties began in 1994 as a solo practice under the name of C. Bradley Franz, MD. He started his offices in Clarksburg and Elkins, WV. After some time it grew, the first dermatology associate was added, and Franz Dermatology Inc. started. The practice now known as Mountain State Medical Specialties includes providers in dermatology, family medicine, asthma, allergy care, and Mohs Micrographic Surgery for skin cancer.

At WVJC, we are confident in the care they provide to their patients by seeing how much they provide to the WVJC students. This site has many locations and is dedicated to hiring excellent medical staff.   We are thankful that they provide our students with the learning experience they do.

A recent graduate that completed her externship at Mountain State Medical Specialties couldn’t say enough about how wonderful it is there. She said, “Not only did I learn so much there, I became comfortable and felt like I was part of the family.” She was asked to join the team at Mountain State shortly after graduating from the Clinical Medical Assistant program. She is happily employed there and highly recommends them for your health care needs.

Jacob Rae – Student Highlight

Jacob Rae is a student in the Network Administration/Security program at WVJC Morgantown.  He was always into technology as a kid and liked to take things apart to learn how they worked. As he grew up, he decided to look for potential career opportunities that would allow him to work in the field. He has looked into cybersecurity and programming and feels that the foundation that he’s getting in the NA/S program is a necessary step in his career path.

Jacob is originally from Michigan and moved to Pennsylvania after graduating from high school. He attended a local community college in PA, but it was not the right fit for him. In talking with a friend, they recommended WVU or WVJC. He chose WVJC because of the fast-track program and smaller class sizes. He prefers the fast-track program because most of his classes are preparing him for a career in his field. Jacob appreciates the extra time that his teachers take to answer his questions. He said, “You can tell they (the faculty) care about the students and their classes by the time and detail they put into the lesson plans.”

His favorite part about being a student at WVJC is all the people he gets to meet and the diversity of students in his classes. He attends class with young people like himself. However, he also has classes with those starting new careers later in life, as well as those who have been in the field and want to further their career. His favorite class has been Student Success Strategies, taught by Director of Career Management, Samantha Esposito. Samantha has since moved into a new role at the campus as Campus President. He said, “Sam made sure everyone was involved in the class and participated!”

After graduation, Jacob would like to work in an environment with a large IT infrastructure. He used the example of a local hospital. After getting some experience in the technology field, he will decide if he wants to pursue further education. In five years, Jacob wants to be working in his field.

Danielle Collins – Student Highlight

Danielle Collins is a Clinical Medical Assistant student at West Virginia Junior College Bridgeport. Before attending WVJC, Danielle attended Fairmont State University and was majoring in the education program. The classes were far larger than what she was used to in high school, building professional relationships with her professors was hard, and it wasn’t her “cup of tea,” she stated. Looking back, Danielle realized that education was not the career she wanted to pursue, and that is why she started to explore different options. During Danielle’s search, she found WVJC and requested more information, and began the enrollment process for the Clinical Medical Assistant program.

What finalized Danielle’s decision to enroll was the relatively small classes, which made her feel more comfortable. Danielle, who is very goal-oriented, has thought about other educational opportunities in the future. This is why she thought the CMA program was the right choice for her. Danielle sees herself enrolling and attending the new Nursing program at WVJC Bridgeport and working as a registered nurse in 5 years.

When Danielle was asked what her favorite part of attending WVJC was, she replied, “My favorite part about attending WVJC is definitely the professional relationships I have formed over the months with all of my instructors. Although I do not see each of them every term, I know that they will be willing to help me at any time.” The two instructors that stand out the most to her are Ms. Holyfield and Mrs. Syrews. Danielle says, “It’s hard to pick just one, but I will never forget them. They are always willing to do whatever they can to help me succeed and are two of the best instructors I have ever had; they will always be included in some of my favorite memories at WVJC.”

After graduation, Danielle wants to work as a Certified Medical Assistant in a hospital setting to experience and see different things every day. Danielle is due to graduate in December of 2020, and from all of her experiences, she says, “I would 100% recommend WVJC to a friend. I am so glad I found this school because it has given me so many opportunities. I have had so many positive experiences with the classes and instructors that there would not be a reason for them to not want to enroll!”
