Dalerae Stocker – Student Highlight

Have you ever felt lost?  Have you ever felt like you needed a change in career paths, but just don’t know where to start?  This is how Dalerae felt before she decided to contact WVJC Online.  When her admissions advisor first called her, Dalerae recalls, “She actually listened to me and knew how to make my hope a reality!”  From that day forward, Dalerae has been working diligently toward her goal of becoming a Medical Assistant.  Her goal is to help people.   She is currently a Social Worker. However, there is not much positive change in that role.  The daily, positive change, no matter how small, is what she craves.

This is a feeling she has had before.  In fact, Dalerae has tried numerous times to complete her education without success.  “My first college was OU, and the classes were much too large to get the one on one that I needed. My second college was the University of Rio Grande. The classes were small, but they didn’t have the ability to work around my work schedule. My third was Indiana Wesleyan. It was also online, but lacked the communication I needed.”  Then she found WVJC Online.  The online program that WVJC offered fit all of her needs, so she took the leap.

Almost a year into her time at WVJC Online, Dalerae is doing great in the Clinical Medical Assistant Program.   She is supported by the faculty and staff and is able to openly communication even the smallest of questions.  Dalerae’s favorite part of her online program at WVJC is the ability to get in touch with faculty at any point, which encourages her to ask more questions, which translates into more success.  The ability to find assistance quickly and easily from instructors has made the classes that much easier to understand. She also enjoys the flexibility that the online courses at WVJC offer.  Everything has a due date, but you are able to easily complete the assignments around your work and family schedule.

After graduation, Dalerae would ideally like to work as a Medical Assistant in a Pediatric office. She plans on continuing her education in the future while working with children.

A few tips from Dalerae are: Log into your online campus daily at the same time to avoid procrastination.  Also, stick to your schedule.  These two things can help tremendously when dealing with daily life while completing an online program.

Student Highlight – Sydney Shaver

Sydney ShaverSydney Shaver always has had a sincere interest in the medical field. Initially pursuing pre-med at Alderson Broaddus, Sydney began experiencing some health complications related to a car accident years prior. After taking some time to get better and get back on track, Sydney resurfaced – more determined than ever to obtain her college degree and pursue a career in the medical field.

Continuing towards a medical program was crucial for Sydney, but she also needed the flexibility of an online campus. “WVJC was the best option for me. They offered online classes and helped me through the progress of everything. Even though it’s online, the communication between my professors and me is great!”

The online Clinical Medical Assistant program was appealing to Sydney because of the stability of the medical field, coupled with her enduring passion for working with the public. However, the WVJC online campus was one of her favorite aspects. “My favorite part of attending WVJC is how convenient it is for me to get a degree. WVJC has helped me through my schooling days. I am happy I went with this school. WVJC helped me to envision my future, when I didn’t think I was going to get to.”

Throughout her studies as a Clinical Medical Assistant student, Sydney has especially enjoyed the mentoring provided by her clinical instructor, Carrie. “She gives us so many tools to help us remember stuff by. Carrie also makes clinicals fun by letting us try to win prizes in different ways.”

Looking ahead to the future, Sydney knows exactly what she wants: a career as a Clinical Medical Assistant. “I can’t wait to graduate and start my career. WVJC has always been there to support me, and to help me find a job. It is a blessing. Most schools are not like this one.”

Online degrees are one of the best advantages to a technological society.  These degrees can offer you the advantage of flexibility and the ability to keep working while earning your degree.  But not all online degrees are the same, and not everyone is a good fit for an online program. I know what you’re thinking… How could you say that? Well, I know that I am, perhaps, proposing an unpopular thought, but hear me out; we need to talk about some of the basic areas that can affect you in an online degree.

Having the opportunity to continue your education online has open many new avenues for countless people.  But what makes the difference between being successful in an online degree and not? Good question. Let’s look at some of the main factors that you should ask yourself to help decide if online education is the right path for you.

I have broken it down into five areas that we at WVJC-Online have found to be the biggest influences: obligation/responsibilities, dedication, persistence, great communication skills, and your personal learning style.

First, we need to look at your current obligations and responsibilities.  Are you a single parents who works full time and has three kids under the age of 10?  If that’s the case, it’s hard to go to the bathroom by yourself, let alone dedicate all of the hours needed to be successful in school.  However, what if you plan for your kids to spend every Wednesday night and Saturday at their grandparents? Well, that can free up time to invest in schoolwork.  What if you have a job that has crazy hours; one day its 7am-3pm the next its 4pm-11pm.  It can be difficult to go to class when you need the hours at work, but the schedule does not provide the consistency needed to be successful for an on-ground degree. In this case, being the night owl that you are… you do your best work at 3am… WVJC-Online can accommodate.

Ok, so you have evaluated your obligation and responsibilities in life, have developed a plan to add school, and life is still manageable. Good!  Next we will look at areas 2-5, because we, at WVJC-Online, have found that they always go together.

Dedication: You are the one who decided to better your life by going to school, but you need to realize that things do not happen overnight. The Great Wall of China took 2,000 years to build, we are asking that you give yourself, and us at WVJC online, 18-solid months.

Persistence: You need this when things don’t follow the plan… is it just me or does this happen often?  Your kids get sick, you get sick, and your car breaks down… things happen in life.  The important thing is that you don’t give up! Yes it’s going to be hard, yes it’s going to take effort, but is it worth it? Yes it’s worth it! This is you building your future, instead of someone else dictating it for you.

Communication skills: You have homework due in two days…. You have no idea what the lesson is trying to tell you… who do you call? Ghostbusters!!!  Ok, well not really, but your teacher can help.  We at WVJC-online have a 24 hour policy, if you contact your teacher, they will respond within 24 hours.

Learning style:  Are you a person that needs to hear the material to understand it? Or maybe you have no patience for reading… its annoying and you don’t understand. If you are bobbing your head up and down for those statements, then maybe online isn’t for you.  WVJC-Online degrees are heavily based upon a student’s ability to read and understand basic information; yes the teachers do go over that information but they need you to play your part as well.

We at WVJC-Online want all of our students to succeed! We are here to help! This is a guide to starting the process of looking into your options, asking yourself important questions, and setting yourself up for success in, not only, your education; but your new life after you graduate from WVJC-Online with your associate degree.
