Lori Polen – Student Highight

Lori attended college the first time at the age of 19.  As life often goes, she was faced with challenges that took her away from that experience. “As I look back now, I realize how beneficial online learning would have been for me. I wouldn’t have had to drop out had online classes been offered.”

Lori is currently working in management in the retail industry. Having been in that industry for a while, she decided that she wanted to create a plan that would allow her to stop working retail and find something less stressful. Having management experience under her belt, she decided to go into WVJC’s Business Administration/Human Resources program. This is the first step in her plan to exit the big box retail setting and achieve her goal. “I chose my program because it has a broad job field that gives me a wide variety of options in the job market.” Lori says she would love to see herself helping others or marketing products for a company.

Lori chose WVJC Online because of the flexibility of the schedule, having a campus close to home, and the friendly staff. Her favorite thing about being a student at WVJC Online would be the instructors. “They don’t nitpick about everything and the timeline for assignments is very fair.” So far, her favorite class has been marketing. “Marketing really gives you a chance to use your creative side and the course makes you feel like you are doing real job-related work in the field.”

Lori’s ideal job after graduation is working in the Human Resources department for the state of West Virginia. She enjoys helping employees develop their skills and finding the best path. Her five-year plan is to be settled down and in a position with little to no stress.  Lori feels that when you love what you do, you career is much less stressful.

While she would recommend WVJC Online to friends, she does want to make it clear that online classes are not easy. “You have to have lots of willpower and self-discipline to get the work done by the deadlines. The work is simple so long as you follow the steps outlined in each syllabus and have a goal set. The staff is always ready to help, so when you combine people who want to see you succeed and your own willingness to see it through, then WVJC Online will be your easiest route for online learning.”

Ansleigh Fisher – Student Highlight

Ansleigh Fisher is attending WVJC Online to pursue her Business Administration degree. She chose WVJC specifically because it offers the flexibility to complete her degree 100% online. She says, “Being a stay at home mother, I needed to be able to access all of my classes online.” She previously attended College of Central Florida, but now lives in West Virginia.

Ansleigh chose her program, Business Administration, because her goal at the end of her program is to own her own business and knew that the only way to reach her goal was to obtain a degree so she would have the knowledge to do so. “My favorite part about attending WVJC Online is that if I have an issue, I can email my professor and they email me back in a timely manner. The staff members that I have talked to since my journey began at WVJC have been professional and helpful,” says Ansleigh.

Shane Welter, Business Administration Program Director, and Dustin Blankenship, professor, stand out to her as being dedicated to making sure assignments are fully understood. They both want to see their students succeed in their classes. She says, “I would definitely refer a friend to attend WVJC because the staff and college are overall amazing. Classes are easily accessible because of Canvas, as well as professors are professional and ready to help you succeed in class to graduate.” Ansleigh says she would definitely refer a friend to WVJC Online because the staff is amazing!

Online TEAS Prep Course

class notes from notebookOk, you have made the decision… You have thought about it a long time, have had more conversations about it then you care to recall, and have made your choice. You have decided to become a Registered Nurse! Whoo deep breathe… now what? How do you start the process? Who do you need to talk with? What do you need to turn in? How is this going to affect my current job and family? All of these question are vitally important on the journey to becoming a Registered Nurse.

For most nursing programs there is one large hurdle- the dreaded TEAS test. We get it, standardize tests are scary. And let’s be honest, who really remembers how to find X ten years after high school? Not me. The right preparation for the TEAS test can ease your fears and turn this hurdle into a bearable bunny hop. For those that want to maximize their efforts, consider the TEAS Prep class from WVJC.

This online class is broken up into the three areas reflecting the TEAS test: Math, Science, English language/ Reading. Each section has online material to refresh your knowledge on the topic, quizzes to take, and an abundance of additional information on each subject if needed. All of that is fairly standard to any online class. In my opinion, there are two amazing part about this class from WVJC-Online. One, the teacher in charge of the class, Mrs. Pratt, and two, content remediation.

Let’s start with my favorite, Mrs. Pratt. Not quite sure how to solve for that pesky X in the math problem, send her a text, she will walk you through it! How about trying to figure out how many electrons an atom has…. she can sent you a slide show. Not only is she a personal tutor for the TEAS Prep class at WVJC, she is also your personal cheerleading section. We all know the difference a good, attentive and motivated teacher can have on your learning experience. Mrs. Pratt is not only there to help you learn the content, but also to help you discover the internal strength needed to pass the TEAS.

Content remediation is my other stand-out pick for this online TEAS Prep class from WVJC. The idea is simple, if you cannot pass the quizzes at a B level, then you need more time on that subject. The remediation feature provides immediate feedback on your progress in that section. Once you review the remediation topic, you are taken back to the quiz and pick up where you left off; hopefully, with a better understanding.

To boil it down, we at WVJC-online know that it takes more than brains to be a good registered nurse; we also know registered nursing programs are crazy hard because of the amount of material covered. That is why the TEAS Prep class through WVJC-Online gives you the educational content you need to be successful, but also the motivational backing to make it through the TEAS test.
