How to Tell if a Career in Cybersecurity is Right for Me?

Have you ever considered a career in cybersecurity? If so, you may have some questions before moving forward.

The demand for cybersecurity professionals is growing. In 2019, 70 percent of qualifying organizations regularly implemented protective network systems to prevent cyber threats from compromising daily operations. As this trend continues, the door to a rewarding career in cyber technology and protection should follow.

Below we’ve detailed a list of questions you should consider before pursuing a career in cybersecurity and how WVJC Online can help you reach your goals.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Before entering any technology field, you should ask yourself, “What will I spend my time doing?” There are various entry-to-high level field opportunities in cybersecurity. It would be best to begin by researching each position. This will help you start formulating opinions about your level of interest and whether a cybersecurity career would be a good fit for you.

At WVJC Online, we will help to prepare you for a career in any one of the following fields:

  • Junior Security Analyst
  • Cyber Operation Specialist
  • Data Recovery Specialist
  • Incident Responder
  • Malware Analyst
  • Pen Tester
  • Computer Support Analyst
  • Help Desk Analyst

Do you have an ability to uncover and reporting sensitive information related to the success of an organization (Incident Responder)? What about simulating a company’s black hat attacks to improve back-end protective systems (Pen Tester)? Would you enjoy identifying, examining, and understanding various forms of malware and their delivery methods (Malware Analyst)?

Answering positively to some of these questions will help push you in the right direction towards a career in cybersecurity.

WHAT DOES THIS COMMITMENT LOOK LIKE?

In almost any profession, a commitment to lifelong learning is essential to establishing a successful career. Therefore, you should consider if a commitment to self-education in cybersecurity is worthwhile. With each passing year in the modern world, methods, field knowledge, and technology will continue to improve — as will those cyber threats you are tasked to mitigate.

You should ask yourself the following three questions:

  • Do you enjoy learning about technology?
  • Do you like the prospect of implementing your skills in a professional work environment?
  • Are you willing to keep your skills up-to-date and continue developing them over time?

Cybersecurity is a field alive with opportunities. The best candidates are those who take a long-term approach to learn in their respective fields.

WILL I HAVE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE?

A decision to pursue a career in cybersecurity will require proper education, training, and certification.* At WVJC Online, we’re committed to providing all three. Our 90 credit program will provide you with the quality education, training, and opportunity for certification* that you’ll need before pursuing a career in cybersecurity.

However, nothing is better than firsthand experience. We help students gain hands-on experience by providing an externship at the end of their program.

If you’ve made it this far, but aren’t sold on the idea of a career in cybersecurity just yet, look in your community for employment opportunities, externships, or related engagements into gaining experiential knowledge of this field.

Just like a prospect for the police academy, a ride-along might be what you need before making a well-informed decision about your future. This could be a place for you to garner and hone the skills necessary for a satisfying and rewarding career in cybersecurity and protection.

Building a Better Future for Yourself: Cybersecurity Careers

Hackers cost businesses money. With daily threats to security and disclosure of secure information, hackers affect bottom lines and consumer confidence. With nearly 500,000 vacancies around the country, cybersecurity is one of the most in-demand career opportunities available today.

Are you interested in joining the fast-paced, exciting field of cybersecurity? Then, read on because you might have what it takes!

WHAT IS CYBERSECURITY?

Professionally referred to as “information technology security,” cybersecurity is the protection of computer systems and networks from the theft of or damage to their hardware, software or electronic data, as well as from the disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. In layman’s terms, cybersecurity technicians ensure the regular optimization of all electronic systems and data from foreign threats.

HOW OFTEN DO ATTACKS OCCUR?

It isn’t uncommon to fall victim to a cybersecurity attack. According to Security Magazine, there are over 2,200 attacks daily, which breaks down to nearly one cyber attack every 39 seconds.

Government defense, healthcare, finance, and educational systems are some of the highest recorded attacks worldwide. For example, nearly 66% of all businesses experienced a phishing attack in 2020. Furthermore, Comparitech estimates a total value loss of 8.6% as the result of a cyberattack.

Experienced hackers are after vital information such as credit cards, social security, company records, and numbers. Often, these records are then distributed en masse to the highest bidder. One of the most recent cyberattacks threatened to compromise the entire electronic system of the Colonial Pipeline. Even small businesses can fall victim to cybersecurity crime, as they often utilize resources from organizations targeted by cybercriminals.

WHY IS CYBERSECURITY IMPORTANT?

With an increasing number of hackers beginning to target more complex networks, cybersecurity professionals are constantly educating themselves on the trends of cyber-criminality. In addition, the ripple of cyberattacks can have long-standing effects on the compromised business or corporation and their clients, networks, and other connected companies.

Cybersecurity experts are vital to company services, detecting vulnerabilities, recommending security programs, and developing backend systems that seek to reduce the frequency and quality of corruption threats. As hackers grow in sophistication, cybersecurity specialization grows with it.

CYBERSECURITY CAREERS

Careers in cybersecurity include entry, mid and advanced level positions. Those who are intellectually curious and have strong critical thinking skills are particularly suited for this field. Some might find that they are better suited for consulting, while others are better suited for technical coding. Still, others in the field, who are creative and forward-thinking, seek to develop new technology that offsets cyber threats within government and private industries.

Careers in cybersecurity are seemingly endless, and may include some of the following:

  • Junior Security Analyst
  • Cyber Operation Specialist
  • Data Recovery Specialist
  • Incident Responder
  • Malware Analyst
  • Pen Tester
  • Computer Support Analyst
  • Help Desk Analyst

Cybersecurity requires a preoccupation with problem-solving and prediction of future behavior. As a result, potential employers will look for someone with data breach experience, technical coding, and security system curation. Here are the top 38 companies that you’ll want to get to know!

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

Cybersecurity experts should begin to acquire a basic understanding of computers, systems and networks, data analysis and programming, fundamental security design principles, knowledge of cryptography and IT system components. They will also need to be well versed in cyber defense and cyber threats.

While it may seem overwhelming at first glance, those best suited for a career in cybersecurity tend to enjoy it. And here at WVJC Online, we know just where to start!

Cybersecurity Program Highlight Part 2

WVJC is thrilled to highlight the Cybersecurity program. The demand for cybersecurity positions continues to expand nationwide. According to Cyberseek, there were 166,000 openings for Information Security Analysts in the United States from October 2019 – September 2020, but only 125,570 workers were currently employed in those positions, leaving a shortfall of 40,430 workers. There are also 355,600 additional openings that request cybersecurity related skills, and employers are struggling to find workers who possess them (Cyberseek). As a result of this demand, WVJC recognizes the relevance of cybersecurity professionals in today’s business world, so we set out to develop our own Cybersecurity program.

WVJC’s Cybersecurity program prepares graduates for a variety of entry-level technician/analyst opportunities in information security with an emphasis on cybersecurity offense/defense strategies, network security administration, system hardening and configurations, and reducing exposures to cyber risks. Our students use theory, research, and hands-on activities to develop the skills to ensure appropriate security controls are in place that will safeguard network infrastructures, digital files, and personal identifiable information (PII) in order to respond to security attacks and breaches. In this program, we seek to help develop students into knowledgeable employees and help develop them personally and professionally through our general education component, which will enable our graduates to succeed in their careers. Core curriculum includes courses such as systems diagnostics and analysis, networking fundamentals, and cybersecurity defense, to name a few. The completion of this program could also be used as an opportunity to maintain existing employment or advance in a career.

At the conclusion of the program, students will be prepared to sit for the following certifications:  the CompTIA Network+, the CompTIA Security+, and the CompTIA CySA+. William Zink, a student in our Cybersecurity program, said, “I think it’s a very good program. I worked previously as an electrical engineer, and I’m learning a lot of networking details that I didn’t know before.  I’ve had great interactions with the teachers and with the online experience.”

Jacob Rae – Student Highlight

Jacob Rae is a student in the Network Administration/Security program at WVJC Morgantown.  He was always into technology as a kid and liked to take things apart to learn how they worked. As he grew up, he decided to look for potential career opportunities that would allow him to work in the field. He has looked into cybersecurity and programming and feels that the foundation that he’s getting in the NA/S program is a necessary step in his career path.

Jacob is originally from Michigan and moved to Pennsylvania after graduating from high school. He attended a local community college in PA, but it was not the right fit for him. In talking with a friend, they recommended WVU or WVJC. He chose WVJC because of the fast-track program and smaller class sizes. He prefers the fast-track program because most of his classes are preparing him for a career in his field. Jacob appreciates the extra time that his teachers take to answer his questions. He said, “You can tell they (the faculty) care about the students and their classes by the time and detail they put into the lesson plans.”

His favorite part about being a student at WVJC is all the people he gets to meet and the diversity of students in his classes. He attends class with young people like himself. However, he also has classes with those starting new careers later in life, as well as those who have been in the field and want to further their career. His favorite class has been Student Success Strategies, taught by Director of Career Management, Samantha Esposito. Samantha has since moved into a new role at the campus as Campus President. He said, “Sam made sure everyone was involved in the class and participated!”

After graduation, Jacob would like to work in an environment with a large IT infrastructure. He used the example of a local hospital. After getting some experience in the technology field, he will decide if he wants to pursue further education. In five years, Jacob wants to be working in his field.

Cybersecurity – Online Program Highlight

Technology is a huge part of everyday life, and is on the top of the list of frustrations when it is not working properly.  If you are an individual that loves to solve technical issues and are looking for a new career, you might be drawn towards information technology. At WVJC Online, we have developed a robust and fast-track Cybersecurity associate degree program. Our Cybersecurity program gives students the tools they need to become successful IT professionals and learn skills that will help protect businesses against cyber threats and attacks.

Within this program, students learn a variety of skills including, but not limited to: risk assessment, forensics, ethical hacking, intrusion detection, and security architecture. Since having a hands-on approach is so important when learning about new technology, students get to branch out from regular online classroom learning and have the opportunity to experience virtual simulations from the comfort of their own home, and then complete an externship where they will work alongside industry professionals for 12 weeks. At the end of the 18-month program, students will earn an associate degree and will have had the opportunity to sit for three industry certifications – Network+, Security+, and Cybersecurity Analyst+ (CySA+) certification. All three of these certifications are offered through CompTIA, a globally recognized certifying body for technology certifications.

Once a potential student decides that cybersecurity is the right path for them and they have taken that important step of requesting information, one of our online admissions advisors will be in touch! They will lead you on a personalized virtual college tour and provide details about the cybersecurity program, as well as everything else WVJC has to offer – career services, academic support team, and financial aid (to those who qualify). Potential students will then meet virtually with an instructor from our cybersecurity program, and they will work together to determine acceptance.
