Christina Hayslett – Staff Highlight

Christina Hayslett is a Financial Aid Officer at WVJC Charleston. She finds it fulfilling to work at WVJC because of the many lives she can be a part of, as she watches students grow into confident and successful individuals. “These are real people, mothers, fathers, first time-students, all making an effort to do and be better. This gives us the responsibility to do and to be better as well.”

Christina understands the demographic of many of our students. A graduate of Marshall University, Christina began her higher education right out of high school, but as she began to have a family of her own, the inconvenience of traditional school interrupted her education. It was several years after her daughter was born that she returned to finishing her bachelor’s degree. “If I had known about a school like WVJC, I would’ve seen that I could both be a mother and student at the same time, and not make a sacrifice to either.”

Christina has previously worked in admissions in low-income based education services and understands the connection between education and finances. Christina says, “It is the goal of WVJC Financial Aid, to make school affordable today, but not leave you with an enormous debt tomorrow.” The financial aid team in Charleston works to establish a plan that allows you to focus on your education and not the burden of cost. As a native of West Virginia, Christina concludes, “West Virginia residents need careers here in our own state, and at WVJC, we can help make that dream a reality.”

“Traditional college isn’t for everyone, but education is. Finding the right school, a program that you are interested in, and a staff that supports your real life is key. We have that here at WVJC because WE CARE about your success.”

Carlie Wagner – Graduate Highlight

Before deciding to attend WVJC, Carlie Wagner was a senior at Buffalo High School. Carlie understands the importance of a college education and she knew from a young age that she wanted to earn her degree.  When she started looking at colleges, she knew she wanted a fast track program that would lead her into a career. Carlie also knew that she did not want to spend years taking classes that were not related to her field of study and the burden of unnecessary student loan debt.

Carlie was interested in the medical field starting at a young age. She chose the Clinical Medical Assistant Degree Program at WVJC because her goal is to be a Registered Nurse. Carlie said, “My favorite part about attending WVJC was meeting new friends and learning new information.”  Carlie enjoyed her Anatomy and Physiology classes with Dr. Settle. She said, “In high school, I hated Anatomy, but in college I thoroughly enjoyed it! Dr. Settle and Chelsea Abbott made learning fun.”

During the last 6 weeks of her program at WVJC, Carlie completed 160 hours of externship at Charleston Area Medical Center Urology.  She loved her externship experience at CAMC! She even had the opportunity to work with her mom during that time. Carlie described her externship as an easy transition into the medical field. She said, “I received training for a week and then I was able to chart and triage patients by myself.”

In December 2020, Carlie accepted a position as a Certified Medical Assistant at Marshall Pediatrics. She said, “I am looking forward to learning new things and working with babies and little kids.” After getting some experience as a medical assistant, Carlie’s goal is to further her education to become a Registered Nurse.

Carlie said, “I would totally recommend WVJC to any friend I know who doesn’t want a big debt and is looking for a quick program to get them out in the world and love what they are doing.”

Program Highlight – Information Technology

Two IT students in hallwayStudents at West Virginia Junior College – Charleston Campus know that their success is the faculty, staff and administration’s main priority. This is visible in the halls every day, but the lengths the Information Technology department takes to ensure students’ success might surprise people.

As with every program offered at WVJC, sitting for certification exams is essential. The IT students have been diligently studying and preparing for their certifications.

IT students prepare for the A+ certification and also the CISCO CCENT certification. Over the past few months students have been working with their on-site instructor, Tom Pinkerton, as well as the IT instructor at the Morgantown campus, Robin Addis. The students’ success rate has skyrocketed over the last few months. Two students, Justin Goff and Taylor Swanson have earned their CISCO CCENT certifications with extremely high scores- both in the high 900’s out of 1000.

“I am very proud of my students’ success and their progress in the program. These students will make excellent IT professionals,” says IT Coordinator Tom Pinkerton.

IT Program 2Not only are students in the IT program thriving with their certification exams, but they are also taking their classroom learning to new levels. Students are working on final productions and utilizing technology to take classes virtually if needed. Charleston IT student, Nina Higginbotham, attends Ms. Robin Addis’ course in Morgantown via Google Hangout.

The IT program is expanding and our students love the program! With passion, support and an education, success is possible. At WVJC Charleston we take our students’ goals seriously and work with students to help make their goals become a reality.
