Rodney Wilson – Faculty Highlight

Meet Rodney Wilson, ATI Champion, and Simulation Coordinator!

WVJC Blog Rodney Wilson | WVJC

Rodney Wilson is the new ATI Champion and Simulation Coordinator for the WVJC Nursing program. He works with the nursing students by reviewing their progress and formulating plans to succeed for them in our program. Mr. Wilson’s other job is running simulation scenarios on the mannequins in our nursing lab. This allows students to see specific scenarios they may not witness in their traditional clinical setting, and it gives them the opportunity to grow their clinical judgment skills.

Mr. Wilson’s educational background is in science. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Delaware State University and just recently enrolled at Grand Canyon University and will be working on his Master’s in education.

Rodney’s prior work experience is very unique. He worked as an ice cream chef for 15 years. He was also the general manager of two different farm-based family creameries, where we specialized in homemade custom creamy flavors and novelties. He was also a cake decorating specialist and the recipe guru at the last creamery I worked for.

When asked what attracted you to apply for this position? Rodney stated, “I think the programs here at West Virginia Junior College are phenomenal in what they are setting out to achieve. We are growing and shaping career-driven students that are ready to step right into the workforce upon completion.”

Mr. Wilson expressed, “I solidified my choice to work at WVJC because of the atmosphere and team. The team is so passionate about putting students first and having their education at the forefront of everything that we do.”

When asked what is your favorite part of working for WVJC? Rodney said, “Seeing the students succeed has been my favorite part of working at WVJC so far. Seeing the passion that they have and the accomplished feeling that they get is amazing to see.”

The day-to-day work life looks different for everyone. Rodney’s daily work life varies. Some days he can be found working in the lab, and some days he can be found working with the students on finding ways to improve their study habits and creating a plan for them to be successful in our program.

The students and the students’ futures motivate Rodney every day. Their drive, dedication, and perseverance are the driving force behind what we do here at WVJC. They also remind him why it is important to go the extra mile.

Rodney is most proud of his journey in life. Everyone has their own path, and your success depends on what you do with what you are given. He is proud of the success he has created in all facets of his life, from the blessings to the hurdles.

Mr. Wilson’s long-term career goals are to complete his Master’s degree and start working on a Ph.D. program in education. He sees himself working in the education field for the foreseeable future. Interacting with and shaping the future members of society is an important and heavily needed role.

Something interesting about Rodney that many people do not know is that he spends most all his free time traveling the country exhibiting livestock (Boer goats). He has his own herd where he breeds and raises these goats to be competitive individuals on any level across the country.
