West Virginia Junior College (WVJC) was founded in 1922 and has a rich history serving the community.  In keeping with our innovative past, WVJC is launching a blended (residential/online) associate degree nursing program focused on providing access to students in four rural county regions consisting of 19 total rural counties. Students take classes online while attending lab and clinical experiences in their local rural county regions in the evenings and on weekends.

Even more unique is that nursing skills laboratory and clinical experiences will be enhanced with a state-of-the-art Mobile Simulation Lab (MSL). The MSL is a newly designed RV with two fully equipped patient care rooms containing adult, obstetrics, and pediatric high-fidelity simulators; a control room with two controller stations; advanced technology for recording and reviewing student practice; internal cellular internet capabilities, and exterior TV for participants outside the MSL.

Job Purpose (Faculty & Regional Coordinator):

This faculty member teaches online nursing courses and teaches lab and clinical locally to students that live in Remote Region 4 (RR4). RR4 consists of Greenbrier, Nicholas, Monroe, and Summers counties. This faculty member also serves as the main point of contact for students and affiliates in RR4 and coordinates with the MSL Nursing faculty and the Simulation Technician.

Qualifications (Faculty & Regional Coordinator):

Qualifications are congruent with the qualifications of nursing faculty as required by Title 19, Series 1-11.1 of the West Virginia Legislative Rule.  The Instructor must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a graduate degree with a major in nursing; or
  • Have a bachelor’s degree with a major in nursing and:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate program within one year of employment as a faculty member; or
    • 10 years of direct care patient experience in nursing for full-time faculty; or
    • 2 years of direct care patient experience in nursing for part-faculty.
  • Three (3) years of occupational experience
  • Holds a current, active RN license or privilege to practice that is not encumbered and meets the requirements of the Board of Nursing.
  • Have evidence of current experience in nursing practice and education sufficient to demonstrate professional competence, or for faculty with less than two years’ experience in education, the nursing program administrator will submit to the Board a mentoring and orientation plan as defined by Board guidelines and function under the guidance of a faculty member fully qualified in the specific teaching area and professional competence.
  • Interprofessional faculty teaching non-clinical nursing courses shall have advanced preparation appropriate for the content being taught.

Job Duties (Faculty & Regional Coordinator):


  • Comply with institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the College Catalog, the Faculty Handbook the Nursing Faculty Handbook and follow such policies and procedures.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate and update the purpose, philosophy, outcomes, and organizational framework of the Nursing Education Program
  • Assist in the development, evaluation, and revision of student admission, progression, retention, and graduation policies within the policies of the College
  • Promote positive and productive relationships with service area hospitals, clinics, businesses, industries, and agencies.
  • Be prompt and punctual in reporting for work, in meeting classes, and in keeping office hours.
  • Serve on Nursing Staff committees as assigned
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of materials such as those used in academic administration when requested, including course syllabi, program outlines, articulation, and catalog materials.
  • Promote student development through enrichment and mentoring experiences. Perform any other professional duties as assigned by the Nursing Program Director assist the students to develop an understanding of values, attitudes, and ideals appropriate to the health care profession.

Program Outcomes Management Coordinator*

  • Meet with the Program Director on an annual basis to set up goals and objectives for the year, discuss budgetary requests, and review the previous year’s progress. The Coordinator will incorporate these goals into annual reports, SPE, and other pertinent documents. Review all policies that pertain to the blended ADN nursing program yearly and reaffirm the Program mission, goals, program learning outcomes, and theoretical framework yearly.
  • Coordinate faculty data as it relates to student learning outcomes appropriate to the mission and maintenance of an ongoing assessment program.
  • Lead the Hybrid Online nursing faculty in ongoing discussions of curricular issues to facilitate meeting the Program’s missions and goals. This would entail conducting the End of Program Assessments, analyzing and reporting the data, and working with the Assessment Committee for program improvement.


  • Participate in all nursing program meetings as a representative of the Hybrid Online ADN nursing program and its interests within the Program.
  • Communicate regularly with the Program Director in all Hybrid Online ADN nursing program matters.
  • Act as a representative, when appropriate, to the Nursing Program as a whole and other Programs with regard to matters of joint concern.

Didactic Instruction

  • Follow the syllabus as approved by the Curriculum Committee.
  • Teach all courses as assigned.
  • Design and implement teaching strategies that will assist a nursing student to meet the course outcomes.
  • Evaluate each assigned nursing student’s achievement, progress, and outcomes.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum using a written plan.
  • Provide academic advising and guidance to students.
  • Plan and provide theoretical instruction and clinical or laboratory experiences that reflect an understanding of the philosophy, objectives, and curriculum of the Nursing Education Program.
  • Provide competent instruction in the clinical and theoretical areas of nursing as needed
  • Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education.
  • Collect, record, maintain, and submit accurate class records, including grades, absences, withdrawal, and/or class drop information to Nursing Program Director.
  • Maintain attendance records for classes taught.
  • Evaluate the progress of students in all classes according to institutional, divisional, departmental, and individual criteria.
  • Clinical Instruction
  • Direct, Manage, and Evaluate Student learning in the clinical setting.
  • Assists the student in integration of theory and practice, specific to the course’s learning activities and level of the learner.
  • Evaluates the student’s development of clinical reasoning skills.
  • Remain available at all times the student is in the clinical setting.
  • Directly observe and guide students’ learning activities with the clients.
  • Evaluate students in clinical related to the Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Provide timely and ongoing feedback to the faculty (or to Clinical Coordinator) regarding the clinical site’s effectiveness in supporting the student accomplishment of the course and program outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the unit manager and staff so that the presence of students and their activities are supportive of the unit’s goals and needs.
  • Demonstrate proper respect for students, faculty, and staff and conduct the class in a student-friendly manner.
  • Orient students to the clinical area and demonstrate proper procedures.
  • Work with the Clinical Coordinator and the Nursing Program Director to ensure clinical facilities have course learning objectives and student schedules for each course.

While the Faculty & Regional Coordinator is responsible for fulfilling all primary responsibilities listed above to achieve the immediate goals of the campus, he/she is responsible to meet all organization goals. As such, adjustments or additions to these responsibilities and the methods by which they are achieved may be required by management to ensure operational effectiveness and efficiency across departments, campuses, and the organization as a whole.
