How To Perform a Lung Assessment

Dianne Phillips, the ATI and Sim Lab Coordinator, and practical nursing student Alison Galan demonstrate how to perform a lung assessment on an adult patient.

Alison had already knocked on the door for permission to enter, washed her hands, and identified the patient using two forms of ID. Relying on her knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lungs, Alison demonstrates the appropriate sequence to anteriorly auscultate the lungs. She will listen to one whole respiratory cycle. Once the anterior lungs are assessed, Alison will do a posterior lung assessment using the same sequence. When the exam is complete, Alison will thank the patient, wash her hands, and document the findings.

West Virginia Junior College practical nursing students receive the knowledge and hands-on training to prepare them for a career in healthcare. Request Information today to learn more about the Practical Nursing program at WVJC Bridgeport!
