Hannah DeVos – Student Highlight

Hannah DeVos e1670013167902 | WVJCMeet Nursing Student Hannah DeVos!

Before attending West Virginia Junior College, Hannah DeVos attended a community college in Pennsylvania. While she went there, she finished prerequisite courses and transferred to the Nursing program at WVJC. While attending school, she is also a mother of four amazing children who constantly love and support her while she pursues her career.

When asked why she chose WVJC, Hannah said, “There are many reasons that I chose to enroll with WVJC, but the main reason I chose this school was the accelerated path to my RN.” While attending my previous college, most of the prerequisites that were required to be accepted into their nursing program didn’t pertain to my career path. I like that every class here at WVJC is nursing-based.

Before enrolling, I spoke to a few acquaintances that graduated from WVJC in previous years, and they had great things to say about the accelerated nursing program. It was also nice that the evening schedule perfectly met my needs.”

Hannah chose to study nursing because she is motivated by helping and caring for other people. Her grandparents owned a personal care home, so for as long as she can remember, she has always had a passion for nursing and helping others who need care.

She has several favorite aspects of WVJC. Her diverse cohort has people from all walks of life, yet they have come together as a very tight-knit community that constantly supports each other throughout their nursing school journey. Her favorite teacher is Cathy DeWitt. “Cathy brings her personal experience to the classroom setting in order to provide real-world examples of what she is teaching. She truly cares about her students and goes out of her way to ensure our educational needs are being met.”

Hannah hopes to work in an emergency department or as a trauma nurse after graduation. She also wants to pursue her BSN while being a full-time nurse and caring for her family.

She said she would encourage her peers to pursue a nursing degree at WVJC but warned that the program is intense. It is an accelerated program that prepares you for an incredibly rewarding career. To meet the demands of the field and ensure students are fully prepared to be a nurse, the program is fast-paced to ensure our nursing graduates can handle anything their career may lead them to.

Hannah said that WVJC prepared her for her future. She shared, “from being a high school dropout to attending WVJC, this program has shown me that I am stronger than I ever realized. I have been pushed academically and met every challenge head-on. I will carry this strength forward into the field of nursing with the confidence that I can overcome adversity and provide competent and sensitive care to my patients.”
