WVJC Blog Gianna Duryea | WVJC

Before attending West Virginia Junior College, Gianna Duryea had never attended college. She was working as a personal care assistant, and she knew that she wanted to further her education to expand her career opportunities. She decided to enroll in the Clinical Medical Assistant program at WVJC.

When asked why she chose WVJC, Gianna said, “I chose WVJC because I liked how small the college was. I liked how the teachers were one on one with their students. Finally, I thought that getting my degree in two years was an attainable goal.”

Gianna’s favorite part of attending WVJC was doing the clinical labs with Carrie Friend. She loved performing the Phlebotomy labs, and it was my favorite part of her experience. The teachers were welcoming and wanted to see her succeed. “Carrie Friend was definitely my favorite teacher because she did my labs for my clinical classes and because she took the time to help me with other personal complications that arose during my college experience. She took the time to help me, and she wanted to see me succeed. She took the time to talk to me, and we spent a lot of time together, so we built a bond.”

When asked about her future plan, Gianna said, “I would like to see my life in five years with my credentials in the career that I want. I would also like to start my business in Holistic medicine. Also, just being content in life, waking up knowing that I’m making a difference not only in my life but other people’s lives.”

Gianna definitely recommends WVJC to anyone considering pursuing a new career or growing in one they currently have. Going to school at WVJC allowed her to build skills, prioritize things in her life so she could focus on what is important to her, and prepare her for the workplace.
