Dental Assisting Student Highlight – Micah Jackson

Micah JacksonHuntington native, Micah Jackson, is hoping to have more men join the Dental Assisting program at West Virginia Junior College Charleston Campus.

Currently Micah is the only male in the program and he is an excellent student. Since beginning classes in May 2015, Jackson has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is a role model for fellow students.

“I’ve always wanted to work in the medical field but in a more specified area. Dental is healthcare…I just deal with the oral cavity,” says Jackson.

Like many student, Micah tried other educational institutions but they didn’t fit his needs. He says his favorite part of being a student at WVJC is the staff and faculty.

“The staff here cares about you, like they literally care. I’ve been to other schools and they don’t care if you don’t show up to class and fail, but here I am motivated and the teachers and staff really care about my success.”

A driving force behind Micah’s success is Micah’s girlfriend who also is an outstanding dental student, and their young daughter.

Natasha is my partner in crime. We come to campus together, study together, everything. We want to be able to provide better for our daughter and family…and a career is the way to make that happen,” says Jackson.

His goals are to graduate college and start a dental assisting career and ultimately become an oral surgeon. Micah knows that will take time and dedication but he has a saying he uses to keep motivated and to motivate others.

“You’ve got to educate yourself to get paid.”

Micah says he has worked ‘a million jobs’ but that is not a career. He wants a career and to obtain that stability a degree is necessary.

His advice to potential students is, “Want your education, want to come to class and better your life, do it for yourself and stay motivated.”
