5 Steps To Becoming A
Medical Assistant at WVJC

Have you been considering a career in the medical field, where you can both help patients and perform medical office administrative duties? If this sounds like you, enrolling in a medical assisting training program at WVJC may be a good fit for you!

5 Steps to Becoming a Medical Assistant Student at WVJC | WVJC

At WVJC, students have options regarding the type of training programs they can take. The flexibility of online or hybrid classes allows students to complete their training when convenient, and residential programs allow students a one-on-one approach with instructors. Students in WVJC’s residential Clinical Medical Assistant programs at our Bridgeport and Charleston campuses have the option to complete their training in only nine months, allowing them to begin their careers even sooner.

WVJC is here for you from the moment you request information to the time you complete your training. Continue reading to learn more about the admissions process and the first steps toward entering a medical assisting training program!

Step One: Research and Request Information

Deciding to further your education is a big decision, and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the many options. One of the first steps is determining what type of program best fits your lifestyle needs. WVJC offers medical assisting training in several modalities, including online, hybrid, residential, and residential 9-month programs.

Once you have decided what type of program best suits you, the next step is to request information. By filling out a simple form, you are providing WVJC’s admissions team with basic information, including your name, phone number, email address, and program of interest. Your dedicated admissions team member will then contact you to complete an introductory call to learn more about you and your goals.

Step Two: Complete a Virtual College Visit

After completing your introductory call with your admissions team member, you will schedule a virtual college visit. During this virtual visit, you will learn more about WVJC, the medical assisting training program you are interested in, our career service department, and the financial aid* process. You will also begin to form a relationship with your admissions team member, as they will be with you throughout the admissions process.

Once the virtual college visit is complete, your WVJC admissions team member will recommend that you apply for the Clinical Medical Assistant or 9-Month Medical Assisting diploma program if it is a good fit for you and your career goals.

Step Three: Apply To WVJC And Complete Enrollment Documents

After discussing your potential success with your admissions team member, the next step is to complete a formal application to the program and pay any applicable fees. Upon receiving your application, your admissions team member will send you the necessary enrollment documents to complete a meeting with a member of the financial aid department. These documents include detailed information about the program you plan to attend, releases and student obligations, emergency contact information, and other important resources. While completing these documents, you will have access to your admissions team member, who can answer your questions.

Step Four: Complete A Financial Aid Consultation

After completing your enrollment documents, the next step is to meet with a financial aid team member to discuss your financial situation. They will assist you in filing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and help you determine your eligibility for financial aid*. They will also discuss with you scholarship** opportunities, grants, loans, and other payment options to help you finance your education.

Step Five: Complete Orientation And Begin Medical Assisting Classes

Once you’ve been accepted into the medical assisting training program of your choosing, you will then complete a new student orientation (NSO) course. In this NSO course, students can expect to learn further information about WVJC’s academic policies, processes, and procedures. Upon completing this course, students will be prepared to take classes directly related to the Clinical Medical Assistant or 9-Month Medical Assisting program.

Because WVJC employs a direct admission approach, students will begin taking courses where they learn valuable healthcare skills without the need for unnecessary general education courses. Medical assisting students can expect to learn various essential skills that make them valuable healthcare team members, including patient care, phlebotomy, injections, front medical office procedures, HIPAA, and more.

In your first six weeks of classes, your admissions team member will be there to answer any questions you may have about your program or the institution. You will also meet the program director and become familiar with the academic team. Combined with WVJC’s career management team, you will have several friendly faces cheering you on during your educational journey and beyond.
