West Virginia Junior College is enrolling students for its Practical Nursing program for the Bridgeport campus in the surrounding areas!

Practical Nurses touch patients’ lives and the lives of their families. Can you see yourself helping people on a daily basis? Then, a career as a Practical Nurse may be for you!

Our Practical Nursing program is a direct admission program. Once accepted, you’ve been assured a seat in the practical nursing training program and will not need to complete years of pre-requisite classes. You can graduate and sit for your state licensing exam in 12 months!

In addition to your practical nurse training, our program also prepares you for phlebotomy, IV therapy, and EKG certifications. These professional certifications should boost employment opportunities with cardiologists, medical labs, and hospitals.

Upon graduation, our students are eligible to take the licensing exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)*.
*Passing the NCLEX-PN exam is required to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

In this program, you will learn how to:


Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)* are versatile caregivers that provide routine care for sick and injured patients. Licensed Practical Nurses work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals adhering to care plans for patients, and typically have the following skills:

  • Conduct physical assessments
  • Administer medications
  • Care for wounds
  • Perform IV therapy
  • Process medical records
  • Monitor vital signs
  • Collect medical specimens
  • Perform routine lab tests
  • Monitor medical equipment
  • Perform phlebotomy and administer injections
  • Assist patients with daily activities
  • Evaluate patient’s emotional and spiritual status

Licensed Practical Nurses are often the patient’s first point of contact for the medical facility. Their skill sets include obtaining medical histories, collecting samples for routine laboratory testing, and providing patient care makes them valuable employees in the following areas:

  • Work in an emergency room
  • Work at a long term care nursing home facility

Clinical Locations


Before graduating with a practical nursing diploma, students are required to participate in clinical experiences in various settings. This is in addition to learning the theory content included in the nursing classes.

Some of the clinical rotations nursing students may experience include the following:

  • United Hospital Center
  • Clarksburg-Highland Hospital
  • Fairmont Health and Rehab
  • Grafton City Hospital
  • WVU Medicine

Practical Nursing License


Nursing students will utilize the nursing process to provide safe, effective care while applying the scientific principles of nursing.

This program fulfills the educational prerequisites for professional licensing in West Virginia. Upon program completion, graduates will be eligible to take the West Virginia State Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN)*.

​Successfully passing the West Virginia State Licensing Exam qualifies the graduate to be employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in West Virginia.
*Passing the NCLEX-PN exam is required to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
