Clinical Medical Assistant Program

The Clinical Medical Assistant program at West Virginia Junior College prepares students for careers in the medical field in a short term, 18-month program. CTON CMA Students Healthcare Industry | WVJC Successful medical assistants are dependable, have strong communication skills, demonstrate initiative, and are compassionate while providing patient care. WVJC medical assisting students receive hands-on training that includes taking patients’ vital signs, drawing blood, giving injections, performing and reading EKGs, assisting with medical examinations, and more!

In addition to the hands-on training students receive in the classroom, students complete a 160-hour externship. During the externship, students have the opportunity to observe and apply the skill sets they have gained in the program, in a real work setting.  Clinical Medical Assistant Program Director, Chelsea Abbott states, “Externship is an excellent opportunity for students to network with area professionals and practices the skills they’ve learned in the program.” WVJC Career Management Director, Selena Ramey states, “When students excel during the externship, it can often lead to employment opportunities.”

Graduates from the Clinical Medical Assistant program earn an associate degree and have the opportunity to sit for certification examinations through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).  Students receive training at such a high level that they are eligible to sit for the following certifications through NHA: Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, and EKG Technician. Certifications provide employers third party proof that graduates have the knowledge to be successful in their medical careers.
