But with a career change, West Virginia Junior College Morgantown Campus Adult Admissions Representative Angela (Angie) Wise is affecting more than just her clients’ outward appearance; she’s helping them to change their lives.
Wise was previously employed as a cosmetologist, which she loved.
“I didn’t go to school to change my career,” she said. “I needed to show my son the importance of a college education and the rewards of hard work.”
Following earning her bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University in multidisciplinary studies, which emphasized advertising, public relations and communications, Wise decided that she should earn her Master of Science in Integrated Media Communications from WVU’s Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism. In December, she graduated with her master’s degree. Following graduation, she decided to pursue a career in her new field.
Wise, who was a non-traditional college student herself, relates to the difficulties students face as they return to school after leaving academia.
“I was a single mom and working through school,” she said.
She said that in her current position she has the opportunity to help other people achieve their goals and show their own children the value of education.
“I had a student say to me, ‘if you had not called me, I would have never taken these steps to go back to school,’” Wise said, describing the part of her job that she loves.
