What is the FAFSA?

What is the FAFSA?

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a form that can be prepared annually by college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for financial aid.  Federal Student Aid is the largest provider of student financial aid in the nation. At the office of federal student aid, employees help make college education possible by providing more than $120 billion in federal grants, loans, and work study funds each year to more than 13 million students.

Why should you fill out the FAFSA?

Everyone that is interested in attending college should fill out the FAFSA form. If you don’t you may be missing out on financial aid opportunities.

The 2018- 2019 FAFSA form became available on October 1, 2017. June 30th 2019 is the deadline.

The 2017-2018 FAFSA form has been available since October 1, 2016.  June 30th 2018 is the deadline.

How often should you fill out the FAFSA form?

You need to fill out the FAFSA form for every year you are in school. You can submit your form at fafsa.gov or download the form and print it out.

Where does my FAFSA information go?

Your FAFSA is shared with colleges that you list on your application. Their financial aid offices use your information to figure out how much student aid you may receive at that school. Your information also goes to your state’s higher education agency. This form helps you apply for federal, state, and school aid and only takes about 30 minutes to complete.
