West Virginia Junior College follows a formula of admitting qualified students into our programs, training them with exceptional instruction and hands-on experience and then placing them in careers in their field. Here are a few ways we prepare our students for careers!
1. Career Preparation
Students complete a Career Preparation Course which focuses on resume and professional document writing, the application process, interviewing techniques, professional image building, using social media for professional reasons and job search techniques.
2. Mock Interviews
Students are required to participate in Mock Interviews during their final quarter of enrollment. This involves a real interview with area employers to gain experience and comfort in the interviewing process. Employers interview students using the same process as when they hire for their companies. Students receive feedback regarding the interview and a full report on areas in which they excel or problem areas to work on.
3. Externship
Every student is required to complete an Externship in-field before graduation. The externships are designed to offer a hands-on learning experience in their field environment. The externship gives students experience for their resumes upon graduation, an excellent source of reference and they are provided with a full evaluation of their skills upon completion of their hours.
4. Career Fairs
WVJC Charleston holds two Career Fairs a year as a networking event for students. Over twenty area employers join us to introduce their companies, bring application materials and even hold on-site interviews for student employment. Current students often use this event as a tool to help them find part-time work while they are in school.
5. Life-Time Job Placement Assistance
Alumni of West Virginia Junior College are offered life-time job placement assistance. This entitles graduates to meet with the Career Services Director of their campus at any point for assistance updating their resume and searching for a new job. Some schools offer assistance getting the first job out of school…we offer assistance for your lifetime!
